Importance of Eating a Balanced Meal
October 01, 2018
Nutrition isn’t just about calories. Being ‘skinny’ or in the healthy weight range does not guarantee that one may be in perfect health. Our diets and societal lifestyle have changed dramatically over the years and no doubt contributes to the various chronic diseases which are predicted to account for almost three-quarters of all deaths worldwide by 2020. While the numbers may seem scary, the good news is, chronic and lifestyle related diseases do not occur overnight.
Everything we eat matters. A balanced diet and healthy lifestyle habits can help to lower the risk of many chronic diseases by giving our bodies the proper nutrition it needs to function and stay healthy. Taking that away would mean that we are more prone to sickness, fatigue and poor performance.
So what is a balanced diet and how to achieve it?
A balanced diet is one that includes foods from all food groups (carbohydrates, proteins, dairy & alternatives and good fats), low in sugar, unnecessary fats and high in vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. ‘My Healthy Plate’ by the Singapore Health Promotion Board is an easy visual guide for balanced and healthy meals. Focus on variety, balance and moderation; and as with building any lifestyle habits, start with small changes.
